ROME - The story of Guns N' Roses returns to make noise with an updated biography that promises to put everything back into question. Between excesses, uncomfortable truths and rock myth, Ken Paisli reconstructs the universe of one of the most controversial bands of all time. From the reunion to the genesis of the hits, every page digs into the dark heart of Californian rock. An unfiltered journey inside the legend of GN'R, between music, conflicts and continuous rebirths.
Guns n' Roses. The Truth, the most complete biography on GN'R returns updated in bookshops
Guns n' Roses. The Truth, the most complete biography on GN'R returns updated in bookshops. Considered by the public and critics as a sort of “bible” on the most discussed rock band on the planet, it returns to bookshops, in an updated edition, “Guns N’ Roses. The truth” by Ken Paisli. Published in Italy by Il Castello in the Chinaski series starting from Wednesday 29 April 2026, the biography is confirmed as one of the most complete works dedicated to the Californian band.
Paisli’s typical gonzo journalism style
Paisli’s typical gonzo journalism style, comparable to that of Hunter S. Thompson and Lester Bangs, makes the volume compelling, irreverent and unconventional. The author does not limit himself to the work of a meticulous biographer, but also takes on the role of a sort of “rock psychoanalyst”, offering a deep and personal reading of the internal dynamics of the group.
The reunion as a starting point
The reunion represents the starting point from which Paisli rearranges the threads of a story that spans over forty years of music. From the announcement in 2015 to the first concert the following year at Coachella, the book questions what lies behind the rapprochement between Axl Rose and Slash, and how much the mediation of the more diplomatic Duff McKagan has influenced it. Among those absent stand out Izzy Stradlin, Matt Sorum and Gilby Clarke, each for different reasons. Economic issues, old frictions and a different approach to show business emerge among the motivations identified by Paisli, who nevertheless underlines the respect maintained by Axl, Slash and Duff towards their former bandmates.
Genesis and evolution of the band
The genesis and evolution of the band constitute the backbone of the journalist’s work, who in this updated and expanded edition draws a detailed and in-depth portrait, enriched by personal observations. From research in the depths of the Los Angeles underground scene to constant line-up changes, through exhausting world tours, gossip and record label affairs: nothing escapes Paisli’s investigation.
DON'T MISS THIS WEEK:
By cross-referencing statements from current and former members, the author brings back to light shocking episodes from the early days — from the abuse suffered by Axl as a child to arrests, from fights to health problems linked to alcohol and drug abuse — restoring the portrait of a universe marked by violence and self-destruction, especially in the early phase of the career. What emerges is a story made of rock, business and excess, in which every interview, every rumour and every protagonist is analysed and contextualised with rigour. Between chapters, Paisli does not refrain from expressing his own point of view on the band’s recorded output as well.
The Chinese Democracy case
It is thus Chinese Democracy that represents the true Gordian knot between the Guns of the past and those of the present: a discussed and often criticised album, but re-evaluated by the author as a fundamental creative turning point. A work that did not reach the popularity of Appetite for Destruction or the two Use Your Illusion albums, but which could, in light of the reunion tours (2016–2026), become the starting point for a new record chapter. The story of Guns N’ Roses is marked by continuous highs and lows, between sensational successes and sudden falls, abuse, internal conflicts and artistic crises. And yet, observing the band’s journey and comparing past choices with more recent ones, Paisli’s conclusions appear clear: the Guns have matured. They have reached an artistic, human and professional balance, far from the exaggerated egocentrism of the past. More solid and aware in the management of their careers, they seem to be living a second, lucid youth.
The “family” Guns
Even with respect to solo paths, they have found a centre of gravity that no longer undermines the stability of the “Guns” family — an aspect to which the author dedicates ample space, documenting with precision the activities of the members, past and present. In this “noisy circus” in which truth, half-truths and lies intertwine, Paisli ultimately tries to bring clarity, confirming or denying many of the rumours that have always accompanied the band. Among these is the famous rumour that Axl and Slash argued over the latter’s collaboration with Michael Jackson, accused of alleged child abuse: a reconstruction that the author defines as unfounded, recalling how in 1991, the year of the collaboration, such accusations had not yet emerged. Guns N’ Roses may stumble, but they do not disappear. They follow their own timing, but always find a way to return. The publication is enriched by a detailed discography, videography and bibliography, as well as a colour photo gallery that retraces the band’s history from 1985 to today.
