SAN DONATO MILANESE - In a world scrambling for energy security, Eni has just shattered industry records. The Italian energy titan has fast-tracked Phase 2 of its Congo LNG project, deploying the massive Nguya FLNG unit ahead of schedule. This isn’t just a corporate milestone; it’s a game-changer for the global gas market and a masterclass in industrial efficiency that every investor and energy analyst needs to watch.
Eni Shatters Industry Records: Congo LNG Phase 2 Hits Major Milestone Ahead of Schedule
Eni has launched Phase 2 of Congo LNG ahead of schedule. With the arrival of the Nguya FLNG floating liquefaction plant and the introduction of gas into the new offshore infrastructure system in Congo, Eni announces the start – ahead of the original timeline – of Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project, aiming to export the first LNG cargo by early 2026. The new development phase includes three production platforms, as well as the Scarabeo 5, dedicated to gas treatment and compression, and the Nguya FLNG for the liquefaction and export of gas volumes up to 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), equivalent to 4.5 billion cubic metres per year. The integrated setup enables the full exploitation of gas resources from the Nené and Litchendjili offshore fields within the Marine XII licence, allowing for flexible and progressive volume management while ensuring a steady flow to the Tango (operational since late 2023) and Nguya liquefaction units.
Efficiency and Innovation: How Eni’s Nguya FLNG is Setting a New Global Standard
Phase 2 entered into operation ahead of the project’s expected timelines, just 35 months after the start of construction on the Nguya FLNG unit, setting a new international industry standard for execution speed and efficiency. This milestone was achieved thanks to a combination of technological innovation, meticulous industrial planning, and strong involvement of local entities. Indeed, a significant part of the project was carried out entirely in Congo, enhancing the skills of the Congolese workforce and further strengthening the local industrial fabric – according to the company’s press release. The Nguya FLNG, measuring 376 metres in length and 60 metres in width, employs advanced technologies for carbon footprint reduction and is designed to treat gas with varying compositions, in view of the potential development of other fields in the area. Similarly, the Scarabeo 5, converted from a drilling rig to a treatment, separation, and compression unit, incorporates solutions oriented towards decarbonisation, representing a concrete example of the circular economy and industrial reuse.
Beyond Gas: Powering Congo’s Future Through Energy Transition and Biofuels
Eni has been present in the Republic of the Congo for over 55 years and is at the forefront of developing the country’s vast gas resources. The company supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo, which provides 70% of the country’s electricity generation capacity, and is contributing to the upgrading of the transmission network through the rehabilitation of the high-voltage line between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville. The company is active in initiatives to promote the energy transition, such as the agri-feedstock project that integrates the country into the biofuel value chain and represents a significant development lever for the agro-industrial sector. Furthermore, the company is committed to numerous initiatives to improve local communities' access to energy, water, health, and economic diversification.
