SAN DONATO MILANESE - Eni is strengthening its strategic presence in Libya with the start-up of production from the Sabratha Compression Project, aimed at increasing gas output from the offshore Bahr Essalam field. The development will help sustain the North African country's energy production and boost direct gas supplies to Italy via the GreenStream pipeline. The investment further consolidates the Italian company's role in the Mediterranean and opens up new prospects for energy security.
The installation of a new 1,600-tonne compression module on the Sabratha platform
Eni, in partnership with Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) through the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture, has announced the successful start-up of hydrocarbon production made possible by the Sabratha Compression Project, a strategic offshore development designed to sustain and increase gas production from the Bahr Essalam field, located around 100 kilometres off the Libyan coast. The Sabratha Compression Project involves the installation of a new 1,600-tonne compression module on the Sabratha platform, equipped with new compression trains providing a total capacity of approximately 440 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd). The new module enables production to be maintained even under low-pressure conditions, offsetting the natural decline of the Bahr Essalam field and maximising resource recovery. This will increase gas production by around 800 million cubic metres per year, in addition to the associated condensates.

The additional volumes will make a significant contribution to supporting domestic electricity generation, strengthening Libya's energy security and increasing exports to Italy through the GreenStream pipeline. The start-up of the Sabratha Compression Project confirms the commitment of Eni and NOC to successfully delivering complex offshore developments on schedule, even in challenging operating environments. The project strengthens the resilience of the country's gas infrastructure and represents a tangible contribution to the stability and growth of Libya's energy sector.
Eni has been operating in Libya since 1959 and is the country's leading international operator
Two further strategic projects are also currently under way in the country, the Italian company announced: the Bouri Gas Utilisation Project, for which tie-in and commissioning activities are in progress following the recent installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module, and the Structures A&E project, aimed at developing two offshore gas fields. Eni has been operating in Libya since 1959 and is the country's leading international operator, with equity production of around 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025 and three development projects currently under execution, representing a total investment of approximately US$10 billion.
